What is Henna?

Hello there, my name is Rebekah Gorsuch and I am the creator and artist of the Simple Scrawler Henna Tattoos. I have been practicing my henna skills for over three years and fully appreciate its rich history. I make my own Henna paste right here in the Valley with henna powder, lemon juice, a blend of essential oils, and sugar. This ancient recipe dyes the skin a dark red/brown color. The tattoo can last from 5 days to 3 weeks depending on placement, length of paste treatment, and lifestyle. Keep reading for more details about its rich history and the process of getting your own henna tattoo.

Henna, A Brief History

It is documented that Cleopatra herself adorned her body with henna designs. The tradition may be as old as 9000 years and is even found on Egyptian mummies. The tradition stems from exotic places such as Egypt, Pakistan, India, Morocco, Africa, and Austrailia. Henna paste has natural cooling properties and is also a natural sunblock. It is thought people first developed this paste as a coolant in the hot arid climates where the henna plant thrives. People then began to realize the paste could be applied in beautiful designs. The practice has grown into a multicultural tradition that is often used in celebrations for weddings, birthdays, and holidays. It has been adopted by Western culture and is a growing trend creating a blend between art and ancient history. Be a part of the magic.

Process
1. The henna paste is applied freehand into a beautiful, unique design.

(about 5 minutes for small designs)

2. The paste will be wet as first, it must be allowed to dry.
(about 10 to 15 minutes)

3. I will spray you with an all-natural sealant that helps keep the paste on your skin for as long as possible.

4. Leave the paste on as long as you can, there is a recommended 4 hour minimum. The longer you leave on the paste, the darker the stain, and the longer it will last.

5. The henna paste will begin to peel as time passes, try your best not to bother it until it's time to take it off. Gently scratch the remaining paste off over a sink or trashcan. The design will be an orange color at first and will then darken to a red/brown. The tattoo will fade as your skin naturallly regenerates.
